about

THIS DIGITAL ALBUM INCLUDES BONUS ITEM: 16-pages booklet scan in PDF

Ex Orkest is a special project, contrived, compiled and arranged by The Ex, at the request of the Holland Festival 2000. This record is a co-production of The Ex, Holland Festival, NPS Radio & TV, and Paradisolife.

Reviews:
"The Ex, one of truly the best live bands EVER, explodes on this CD, which is both a great departure from their own work and an expansion of their urgent, suspenseful, driving sound. With 20 musicians at their disposal, the work is like John Williams scoring and conducting Ex songs played by a marching band, huge, chaotically rhythmic but pitched forward w/ clarity. Weird chanting and whispering in the corners only adds to the mystery, while horns and drums reveal everything. If it's possible, this is 10x better than their records with Tom Cora from a number of years ago. "Een Rondje Holland" is a New Orleans street band meeting up with poetry, punk, Eastern- European folk and orchestral jazz: mournful and powerful, angry and crashing. One of the records of the year, in my book."

The Ex Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Ex started playing in 1979. Using guitars, bass, drums and voice as their starting point The Ex have continued to musically explore undiscovered areas right up to the present day: collaborations with jazz musicians and an Iraqi-Kurdish band, Kamagurka, Tom Cora, Sonic Youth, Han Bennink, Jan Mulder, Shellac and Wolter Wierbos. In 2002 The Ex set up a lively musical exchange with Ethiopia. ... more
